Creating a Personal Mission Statement: Reconnect to Your Inner Power

A good personal mission statement helps you know who you truly are, and helps you live every day from your true, authentic self. It helps you to connect with your true values and it helps you create from those values.

The type of Personal Mission Statement that I recommend may be different from ones you have heard of in the past. The purpose here is to help you connect with your essential self by finding single words that express the essence of who you are and what you love.

A good Personal Mission Statement
strikes a chord deep within you
every time you look at it

It helps you to live your life from the inside out, keeping you grounded and focused from within.

Creating traditional mission statements requires you to decide who you want to become in the future. Instead, I’m asking you to spend some time getting to know who you are right now. You may be holding an old picture of yourself in your mind, but throughout your life you’ve grown and evolved. Get a clear sense of who you are now. Separate yourself from the roles you’ve taken on, and the things you think you “have to” do.

Create in the present. Old-style Mission Statements are goal-based and sometimes future-oriented, but the most valuable Mission Statement you can create is not a statement of where you are heading, it’s a statement of who you are right now. Once you tap into your authentic self, you will not need anything to pull you toward your goals. Instead you’ll be powered from within.

Start by asking
the right questions

Fill in the blanks of the following statements:

Right now, my life is about____________________________.
(Write down the essence of what you are actually doing with your time and energy. Like it or not, right now that‘s what your life is about.)

Right now, I want my life to be about_____________.

More than anything, I believe___________________.

What satisfies me is __________________.

What inspires me is_________________________.

What I treasure most of all is ____________________________.

Play around with one or two word phrases until you find the words that resonate deep within you. You’ll know when you’ve found the right ones.

The next step is to re-address the question: what is my life about?

Look honestly at your life to see if there is a disparity between your current daily actions and who you really are. You may find that you are way off, or only slightly off. You may be going in the right direction, but find that you need a different approach to what you are doing.

Look at where you are acting from habit, instead of intention. Uncover any places where you are acting from old conditioning rather than your own true desires.

Finally, go back and write down your personal mission statement:

Right now, my life is about______________.

More than anything, I believe_____________.

What satisfies me is _______________.

What inspires me is__________________.

What I treasure most of all is ______________.

Put this somewhere where you can see it every day.

Instead of using it to strive toward goals, let it activate your inner truth.

As you express that truth through your daily actions, you will become stronger and more empowered, with more possibilities open to you. Don’t let your new personal mission statement be carved in stone. Allow it to evolve as you do.

Allow it to become a platform from which you create and expand in all areas of your life.
